Neem Plaats
(Take a seat)

This project began as an exploration of the Overvecht neighborhood in Utrecht, where I had just moved.

My attention was drawn to a bench in a small park that faced nothing but a hedge. A mistake? Perhaps. But as I wandered, I saw more; staircases leading to nowhere, vast empty fields with no function, benches scattered without thought. It felt like decisions had been made by marking spots on a map, without considering the people who actually live here.

Public spaces should bring people together, offer rest, invite connection. But these spaces weren’t designed to be used; they were placed to check a box, to meet a requirement. They became symbols of neglect, subtle yet telling signs of how a neighborhood is valued.

This project documents these overlooked details, questioning what they reveal about the way a city cares for its residents.
